Läufelfingen

Läufelfingen is a small, lively village on the old Basel–Olten railway line, set in the gentle Jura landscape. It has several historic and «animal-based» sightseeing attractions.
Läufelfingen lies at 556 m altitude at the head of the Homburgtal valley in canton Basellandschaft, at the foot of the Unteren Hauensteinpass. In 1858, the village experienced an economic boom with the opening of the Basel–Olten railway line, which passed south of Läufelfingen through the 2.5 km railway tunnel, at the time the longest in Europe.

The village is the starting point for wonderful walks over the Jura heights. The vantage tower on the 1001 m-high Wisenberg was built in three phases in order to keep pace with the growth of the forest. It offers unparalleled panoramic views from the Black Forest over the Jura to the Alps. An informative alternative route to the top is the «wisenbergwärts» adventure trail starting at the Sommerau railway station. Along this trail you come across the ruins of the Hauenstein fortification, an enormous 40 km-long structure built in World War I to protect the railway line and Jura passes. Also of historic interest are the Homburg Castle ruins and the impressive ribbon loom in the Posamenter-Saal of the Rosengarten guesthouse, a still-functioning relic from the era of a rural cottage industry for the Basel silk-ribbon business.

Läufelfingen offers two unusual discoveries to do with animals. Ostriches not cows graze the pastures of the Homberg farm, whilst pets from the village find their last resting place at the «Tierfriedhof am Wisenberg» animal cemetery, the only one of its kind in Switzerland.

Highlights

  • Homburg Castle ruins: built in 1240, with well-preserved keep.
  • Wisenberg: adventure trail and panorama vantage tower.
  • Straussenparadies (Ostrich paradise): watch these big birds (reservation required) and visit farm shop.
  • Tierfriedhof (pet cemetery) on Wisenberg.
