St. Peterzell
St. Peterzell was once a popular resting place on one of the Routes of St James, an oasis of peace in the ruggedly-romantic, green Neckertal, a Toggenburg side valley. Today the extensive and largely untouched river landscape is one of the main attractions.
The stage-stop town of St. Peterzell lies on the well-trodden route of the pilgrims’ path towards Santiago de Compostela, the so-called «Appenzellerweg» from Rorschach through Appenzell and Toggenburg to the Einsiedeln Monastery and on towards the west. With the revival of hiking and pilgrim activity on the historic route, it is regaining popularity.
The former monastery church of St. Peter, the ornate gabled houses of Toggenburg and the Roten Haus (Red House) with its colourful baroque ornamental painting together form one of Toggenburg’s most attractive village centres. Another worthwhile sightseeing attraction in St. Peterzell is the 17-th century «Falk» house, a so-called «log building» with a strong Swiss character.
Also worth seeing is the «Haus der Stille» (House of Silence) in the St. Peterzell Propstei. Where centuries ago monks from outside the area could spend a few days in contemplation, laymen can now also spend a few days recharging their batteries.
Unspoilt nature, undiscovered culture and carefully cultivated customs: St. Peterzell is a starting point for various hikes to the treasures of Neckertal. These include a guided round hike to sample pleasures of the palate in friendly local taverns.
