Mauvoisin

Mauvoisin is located in the Val de Bagnes, a valley discovered by tourists very early on. The first hotel dates from 1862. Mighty mountains such as the Grand Combin, La Ruinette and Mont Rogneux form an impressive setting for hikes and mountain tours.
Mauvoisin belongs to the municipal district of Bagnes (Val de Bagnes), which with an area of 282 km2 is larger than the whole of Canton Zug. The region has only 7180 inhabitants. From 1947 to 1964, Mauvoisin was the building-site village for the construction of an immense dam: Lac Mauvoisin (altitude 1975 m) has a surface area of over 2 km2 and is 4.9 km long. Holding 210 million m3 of water, it is one of Switzerland’s largest reservoirs. With a height of 250 metres, the arched dam wall is the second highest in Switzerland. The first dam wall was built in 1957 with a height of 237 metres and another 13 metres added on at a later date. This makes it Europe’s highest arched dam which is actually in operation.

Val de Bagnes has the second-largest nature conservation area in Switzerland (150 km2) and offers 400 km of hiking trails and 200 km of biking routes. The villages of Val de Bagnes have largely succeeded in keeping their original character. Bells were cast at the smithy in Oreiller from the 17th century to 1940. Some 300 traditional objects are now on display there.
