Malters

Malters lies between Luzern and Wolhusen on the kleinen Emme river. The riverside position made Malters a mill town and earlier provided it with hydroelectric power, a fact which also attracted other industries.
One of the companies still with a production plant in Malters is the Hug Biscuit & Zweiback Factory. The Hug «ChnusperLand» with its factory shop and an insight into production is a popular outing for groups and families.

Malters has its own maze with hedges and flowers, a favourite in spring and autumn. The town is also an ideal starting point for a variety of excursions into the region: The Emmeuferweg leads along the Emme from Emmenbrücke to its source near Sörenberg in the Entlebuch biosphere. The trail follows part of the Jakobsweg (Route of St. James) which passes through here and long-distance travellers occasionally stay overnight in Malters.

The ascent of Mount Pilatus can also be started in Malters, if only by taking the postbus to nearby Schwarzenberg to shorten the trip. Bikers pass through here on their way over the Glaubenbergpass to the Sarnersee lake.

Highlights

  • ChnusperLand – Hug factory shop for biscuits, Zwieback and frozen products and an insight into production.
  • Villa All'Aria – magnificent building in classical style, facades laced with Sgraffito elements, former seat of the mill owners – the Steiner family. Now a music school.
