Chasseral

The Chasseral at 1607 m altitude is one of the highest summits in the Swiss Jura. It lies on the southernmost chain and dominates the Swiss Mittelland. The regional nature park can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Set between French and German-speaking Switzerland, between rural and industrial areas the transition from the Jura to the Mittelland is marked by contrasts.

The prominent landmark of the Chasseral is the 120-m-high antenna of the telecommunications station. The landscape with its vast variety and colour changes from season to season is a feast for the eyes. Despite an access road and the transmission tower, the Chasseral is a remote hill chain high above the Seeland (lakeland) region, rich in natural treasures and traditions. The Chasseral Regional Park strives to maintain a sustainable and balanced development of the region. Visitors can discover the special features of the region on 12 signposted hiking and mountain biking trails, theme paths and guided excursions as well as along a network of bridle paths.

Hikes on the Chasseral are possible from St. Imier in the north or from Plateau de Diesse above the Bielersee lake in the south. A long but steady ascent across several levels of terrain and vegetation also leads to the high-level Jura trail from Frinvillier to Biel along the striking summit ridge. The higher the climb the more barren the landscape. Only a few swards of grass cover the rocks on the ridge. But the views become ever more magnificent: to the south, the chain of Alps and the lakes at the south foot of the Jura, to the north the expanse of the Jura arc.

Highlights

  • Chasseral Regional Park – supports and coordinates tourism projects, nature conservation and forestry and farming on the Chasseral.
  • Views - from Chasseral to the Vosges and Black Forest, across the Bieler-, Neuenburger- and Murten Lakes, Seeland (Lakeland) and Mittelland as far as the 250-km-long Alpine panorama.
  • Métairies – Alpine taverns, where cheese is still made and guests find refreshment. A round hiking tour leads from Métairie to Métairie offering breathtaking panoramas and local specialities.
