Les Paccots

Les Paccots near Châtel-St-Denis lies between Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) and the Pays de Gruyère. There is an extensive network of hiking trails, unspoilt landscapes, several theme trails and a family-friendly winter ski region.
Les Paccots is a holiday resort that belongs to the municipality of Châtel-St-Denis in Canton Fribourg. It lies in the Veveyse Valley de Châtel that stretches to the ridge of the Moléson chain with its limestone peaks Teysachaux (1909m) and Dent de Lys (2014m; the highest elevation in the municipality).

Les Paccots has hotels, numerous holiday apartments, a camping site and farmhouse holiday accommodation. The landscape is ideal for long summer hikes and mountain biking tours. There is a forestry theme trail, which leads to the peaks of the Moléson chain and the lesser-known rural and unspoilt landscapes such as the peat moor at Niremont or the Lac de Joncs to the south of the resort. The fauna of the Lac de Joncs is of national significance.

Another summer excursion leads to Rathvel on the Niremont mountain to the north of Les Paccots. The small pond of Rathvel was man-made to serve the former peat cutting industry and is inscribed in the inventory of nationally significant amphibian spawning grounds. It has large populations of common toad, grass frog and Alpine newt. Rare plant species can also be found here. There is a bacteria theme path. Visitors can take a scenic ride on a small novelty road train starting at the Cabane du Petit Oiseau.

Other attractions are the gourmet routes of Les Paccots with tasting stops at mountain restaurants serving regional cuisine.

Les Paccots’ main season is winter, when, snow permitting, ski lifts access the pistes on the flanks of the Corbetta and Niremont (Rathvel) mountains. The slopes at Les Paccots and Rathvel are accessible via more than ten lift installations and are particularly suitable for beginners and children. There are five sign-posted snowshoe trails, two signposted winter hiking trails and a covered ice rink.

Highlights

  • Moléson ascent – a pleasant hike through pre Alpine Canton Fribourg to the Moléson peak.
  • Rathvel pond – man-made pond linked to the former peat cutting industry. Now inscribed in the inventory of nationally significant amphibian spawning grounds.
