Laupen
The small historic town of Laupen, on the River Sense just before it joins the Saane, is dominated by the castle on a sandstone spur. At «Läubliplatz» ancient timber-framed houses huddled up close to the sandstone cliffs, as if from a picture book.
Laupen is steeped in history: in a legendary battle in 1339, the outnumbered Bernese defeated the Burgundians and Habsburgs with the support of the former Waldstätten cantons. This joint success led to Bern joining the confederation shortly afterwards. Until the 15th century, Laupen, with its fords across the Sense and Saane, was an important stage point for the east-west traffic between Bern and Fribourg. People are still changing seats here: from a train seat or bike saddle to the saddle of a rail-bike, a bike-like vehicle for four, to enjoy a fun-filled 60-minute trip along the disused railway track to Gümmenen and back.
The «Laupenau-Hirsried» nature reserve in the municipalities of Laupen, Mühleberg and Neuenegg is a water-meadow area of national importance stretching along the banks of the Saane to the large railway viaduct at Gümmenen. The «Römerweg» (Roman Path), a wonderful hike of less than two hours, leads from Laupen through the water-meadow landscape.
In nearby Bösingen, already on Canton Fribourg soil, a tepee village with a total of four tepees offers alternative sleeping accommodation in summer.
