La Sage

La Sage is the home of the famous Hérens cattle breed. It is one of four hamlets nestled on a sunny ledge in the Val d’Hérens with magnificent views in an area characterised by unspoilt landscapes and villages.
The hamlets of Villaz, La Forclaz, Ferpècle and La Sage nestle at an altitude of 1700 metres on a sun-exposed ledge in the Val d’Hérens. All four hamlets belong to the municipality of Evolène. Tourism was slow to develop in the valley and its landscape and villages are rural and unspoilt. The four hamlets on the rock, as they are called, are typical Valais chalet settlements, dominated by sun-blackened timber façades and traditional stone buildings. The St. Trinté Chapel was built in 1840, the baroque St. Christophe Chapel dates from 1670.

Artisanal crafts and alpine dairy farming with the native Hérens cattle breed are important to the valley’s economy. The traditional cow fights take place in spring; the best in each category compete at the cantonal finals at Aproz.

La Sage has magnificent views of the mountains and the Val d’Hérens. The valley’s topography has been formed by the Borgne mountain river, which is fed by the Ferècle and Arolla glaciers and joins the Rhône near Sion, almost 30 kilometres downstream.

The region is an Eldorado for hikers, with a network of 200 kilometres of signposted trails through a varied landscape of streams, forests, flower-carpeted mountain pastures against a backdrop of glaciers and majestic peaks. The area also has a number of winter sports facilities.

Highlights

  • Diversity of leisure activities: hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, snow sports; downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoe trekking
  • Unspoilt villages and landscapes, flower-carpeted alpine meadows.
