Steg (FL)

Steg above Triesenberg in the Principality of Liechtenstein is the cross-country skiing centre of the well-known resort of Malbun. This former mountain pasture belonging to the Walser settlement of Triesenberg is the site of an idyllic mountain chapel.
The hamlet of Steg at an altitude of 1312 metres belongs to the municipality of Triesenberg and is a holiday and hiking region in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Steg is in the Saminatal and was used as mountain pasture by the farmers of Triesenberg, an old Walser settlement. The name «Steg» (foot bridge) refers to the bridge crossing the Samina River. Steg is around halfway between the village of Triesenberg and the resort of Malbun, which is a starting point for various summer hikes through idyllic and tranquil scenery, for instance through the Valünatal and Naaftal to the Liechtenstein Alpine Club’s Pfälzer hut.

In winter, Steg is the starting point of a 15km long cross-country ski run into the idyllic Valünatal. A three kilometre stretch can be floodlit for nocturnal use. Sledging enthusiasts can enjoy the 1km long natural toboggan run down from Alp Stücka to Steg.

A map dating from 1721 shows there was a small church at Steg, an indication of the importance religion played in Walser life. In 1817, the Chapel of St. Wendelin and Martin was either extended or newly built. The present day chapel was restored in 1906/07, when a round bell tower was added.
