Tiefencastel

Tiefencastel lies in the Albulatal Valley at an intersection of important Graubunden traffic routes and on the Albula Railway line. Its location makes Tiefencastel the departure point for many excursions, e.g. to the Parc Ela, a nature park to which Tiefencastel forms the gateway on the valley side.
The historical significance of Tiefencastel (851 m) stems from its geographical location: two traffic routes cross here at the confluence of the Albula and Julia rivers: north-south from Chur to the Julier and Septimer passes and west-east from the Schynschlucht gorge to the Albulapass and via Davos to the Flüelapass into the Lower Engadine and on to the Tyrol. A road also connects Tiefencastel with Lenzerheide.

In 1890 a major fire badly damaged 24 houses, 34 barns and parts of the church. Acclaimed sightseeing attractions are the Carolingian Church of St. Peter Mistail (built about 806) 1.5 km northwest of Tiefencastel in the municipality of Alvaschein. St. Peter Mistail is considered the only largely preserved Carolingian three-apse hall church in Switzerland.

For centuries, the Septimerpass road to Chiavenna/Italy was an important traffic route across the Alps. After the development of the pass roads, a horse-post station was set up in Tiefencastel in 1835.

One attraction is the Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway. With its countless bridges, loop and spiral tunnels, it is an engineering masterpiece and deserves to be admitted to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Between Tiefencastel and Filisur the train travels over the Schmittentobel viaduct until just before Filisur it reaches the hallmark of this stretch of railway: the 65-m-high Landwasser viaduct which curves with a 100-metre radius directly into a tunnel in the opposite cliff face.

One of the most beautiful golf courses in the Alps is located very close to Tiefencastel at Alvaneu, where a modern spa with sulphurous baths has also been open since 2002. The 7-km-long Water Experience Path at Alvaneu also fits into this theme.

The Tiefencastel area offers a wide choice of hikes, for example to the Val Tuors or into Oberhalbstein. In addition, the Ziteil pilgrimage church is located above Salouf, not far from Tiefencastel. At a height of 2433 m the Ziteil is the highest-altitude pilgrimage site in Europe. In winter, the ski resorts of Lenzerheide, Savognin and Davos are within easy reach.
