S. Lucio

The Capanna San Lucio (1541m) lies on the flank of the Monte Gazzirola on the Swiss-Italian border pass of San Lucio, with enchanting views of the Ticino Val Colla and the Italian Val Cavargna.
The old and picturesque San Lucio Chapel stands just few metres across the Italian border. It is richly embellished with frescos, some of which weren’t discovered until a recent restoration. The feast day of San Lucio (or S. Uguzo) is celebrated here on 12 July and 16 August. San Lucio is the patron saint of alpine dairymen and legend has it that he was murdered here. Up to 3000 people take part in the annual feast day celebrations.

The Capanna San Lucio is Canton Ticino’s only Alpine Club hut that has a caretaker in residence the whole year round. There are toilets, showers and 22 berths in dormitory accommodation. The caretaker cooks with regional produce. There are many ascents to the hut to choose from, most of them over short distances, starting at the villages of Bogno, Cimadera or Certara in the Ticino Val Colla (with postbus connection) and from the Italian side from Cavargna or Buggiolo. These ascents take around 1 ½ hours on foot and are a little steeper and longer. The Capanna San Lucio isn’t just a popular destination for hikers but also for mountain bikers.

many lead along the mountain crests surrounding Val Colla: to Monte Gazzirola (2116m) in just under 2 hours, to Monte Camoghè (2227m) in 2 ¼ hours, to Monte Bar (1816m) in three hours or to the Capanna Pairolo (1347m) in two hours. The moderate altitudes, mainly easy trails and short distances make the huts and peaks around the Val Colla a very attractive hiking destination for families with children.

Highlights

  • Views – this Swiss/Italian border pass awards splendid views over the Val Colla and the Val Cavargna as well as the surrounding Alpine peaks.
  • San Lucio Chapel – restored and extended several times, this chapel just across the Italian border on the San Lucio pass summit is embellished with 15th century frescos.
