Muri bei Bern
Gümligen

Gümligen

Gümligen literally has it all: it belongs to the affluent and particularly low-taxed municipality of Muri, yet has remained an almost «normal» village, an attractive residential area on the outskirts of Bern.
Gümligen, at the gates of the city of Bern, is an ideal base for hikers, bikers and other travellers who want to explore the capital from here using public transport. Two railway lines lead into the centre: the SBB line to the main railway station and the narrow gauge line of the Bern-Solothurn RBS regional railway through the Kirchenfeld diplomatic quarter to the Casinoplatz in the heart of Bern’s shopping mile. But

Gümligen and its half-sister Muri also have a lot to offer: e.g. a short hike through the relaxingly rural and traffic free Gümligentäli to Deisswil (wonderful round tour with public transport connections).

The undoubted highlight is the River Aare, great for extended strolls along its banks (continuous path along the banks from Thun to Bern, for example to Bern’s Dählhölzli Zoo) or - even better - for swimming. Muri has a lovely open-air lido with a swimming pool and notably direct access to ultimate bathing fun in the Aare. This is one of the few places in Switzerland where it’s possible to swim in a river of this size and in such clean water. (Important: for experienced swimmers only! Don’t forget to take a waterproof bag for your clothes.).

Highlights

  • Aarebad Muri - 50-metre pool, diving board, non-swimmer’s pool with slide, children’s pool, large meadow and Aare access.
