Gais

Gais in Appenzellerland was famous for its whey cures in the 19th century. In the village square, the beautifully ornate houses with sweeping roofs were built in Appenzell baroque style after the devastating fire of 1780.
Whey cures once created a huge boom in Gais. Here in 1749, a patient with diseased lungs, considered incurable by doctors, was healed within a short time using whey from the milk of Alpine goats. In 1977, the municipality was awarded the renowned, conservationist Wakkerpreis for its care of the aesthetically appealing village centre.

Gais lies in the «Mittelland» of Canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden, surrounded by gentle pre-Alpine hills. As a usually fog-free health resort, it offers guests a wide range of options: hiking on the two local excursion mountains; Sommersberg (1172m) and Gäbris (1251m) with idyllic little moorland lakes, views to the Rhine Valley, Vorarlberg mountains, Alpstein massif, Kronberg and as far as the Glarner Alps. Other attractions are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the Starkenmühle riding centre, the graphics collection at Haus «Blume» and regional excursions e.g. to Alpstein, Säntis, St. Galler Rhine Valley, Appenzell and St. Gallen.

In winter the Starkenmühle Skiwanderzentrum offers around 25km of prepared cross-country ski runs and a night-time run. All in a Nordic-style fir and spruce landscape.
