Vicosoprano

Stone houses and narrow lanes make up the little village of Vicosporano, once the main village of the Bergell. The peaceful valley landscape surrounding the village is in contrast to its eventful past. Both can be explored to the full in Vicosporano.
The Maloja and Septimer passes link the Graubunden Bergell Valley (Val Bregaglia) with the rest of Switzerland. The valley is framed by glaciated mountain ridges and opens up towards the south and Italy. Fragrant chestnut groves and the stone buildings of the Bergell villages lend the valley a Mediterranean ambiance. The unusual Bergell dialect also makes a contribution to this with its combination of Italian with Lombardic and Romansh speech elements.

Vicosoprano played a vital role in the valley's history very early on. The trading routes over the Maloja and Septimer passes helped the valley gain a degree of affluence during the Middle Ages. This is borne out by the stately patrician houses with wrought iron balconies and sgraffito-decorated windows that grace the lanes of the small village.

Both the bailiff and the Bergell high court had their seats in Vicosoprano. Many legal proceedings were held in the Pretorio, the former court, customs and municipal building with its characteristic Senvelenturm (tower). It was also the scene of witch trials, during which confessions were extracted by torture. A visit to the torture chamber in the Pretorio, the pillory block with neck chain and the gallows outside the village give an insight into the methods used in those times. These are also vividly depicted in the book «La Stria» (The Witch) by Bergell author Giovanni Maurizio. Art installations inspired by Maurizio's work are also on view in the village.

Bergell is a hiking and climbing paradise. Vicosoprano is a point on the Via Bregaglia, running alongside the numerous historic Bergell monuments. The Bergell Panorama Trail leads past the village on the northern slope of the valley. «La Panoramica» is truly worthy of its name with numerous vantage points, each one more impressive than the last. The Albigna region, with its jagged rock formations offering excellent climbing tours, is reached by aerial cableway from Vicosoprano.
