Pigniu / Panix

The mountain village of Pigniu has around 30 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality Ilanz/Glion. The leisurely pace in Pigniu is ideal for tanking up on new energy. The Panixerpass and Panixersee lake are excursion destinations reached from Pigniu.
Pigniu lies in the steeply climbing Panixertal valley, a side valley leading off the Surselva. Panixer people have to go down to the valley for shopping, work and school. Besides mountain farming and forest areas, the municipality consists largely of mountains.

The spring waters feed the Panixer reservoir, which is used to generate electricity. On hiking around the Panixersee lake, you come across two steep waterfalls that thunder into the lake. These frequently create rainbows. A huge painting on the dam wall is a reminder of the crossing of the Panixerpass by General Suvorov in 1799.

Coming from Glarnerland, the Russian general led his army of 22,000 men over the 2,407-metre-high pass to then be surprised by snow. The crossing cost the army many casualties. When the exhausted and starving soldiers reached Pigniu, they plundered the village and then burned it down. The villagers were then faced with hardship, forced to survive the winter without food stocks. Today, a shelter open for everyone to use stands on the Panixerpass.
