Riva S. Vitale

Riva San Vitale lies at the southern end of Lago di Lugano at the foot of Monte San Giorgio. The village was already inhabited before the Etruscans, later by Romans. The baptistery at Riva San Vitale is the oldest Christian building in Switzerland.
This baptistery was built on the foundations of a villa or a Roman thermal spa in the 5th century. In the process it was possible to preserve the original mosaic floor. The building has a rectangular layout and at a certain height changes into an octagonal form. As well as the font, Romanesque frescoes dating from the 12th century have been preserved in the interior. The parish church and adjacent rectory form a courtyard in which the baptistery is located.

The town centre of Riva San Vitale has been well maintained: the Palazzo della Croce south of the Santa Croce Church is a family residence dating from the 16th century. The Casa Communale on the Piazza is a representative Renaissance building of the Croce family.

Monte San Giorgio (1069m) on the Italian border is known as «Berg der Saurier» (saurian mountain). Fossils of sea reptiles up to six metres long and other palaeontological finds account for its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage. The summit affords beautiful views. If you start the hike to the summit in Riva San Vitale, you will learn more about the legend of the Blessed Manfredo, an eremite said to have lived in total seclusion on Monte San Giorgio in the 13th century. The miracles depicted in the paintings in the parish church at Riva San Vitale are ascribed to the ascetic.

The neighbouring town on the shore is Capolago, the location of the bottom station of the cogwheel railway up the Monte Generoso (1601m). Views from the «generous mountain» – the literal translation of Monte Generoso – are certainly not miserly: at its foot is the deep-blue Lago di Lugano, on the horizon the white band of the Alps from Monte Rosa to the Bernese mountains as far as the Bernina massif, and to the south the Po Valley and the Apennines. Because the Generoso towered above the sea of ice during the last Ice Age, plants (about 800 species) which are now rare and bird life survived here. A nature trail is dedicated to this topic.

Highlights

  • Lago di Lugano – surrounded by numerous mountains with superb views; citrus fruits and palm trees grow in the mild climate. A lake cruise reveals the diversity and beauty of the region.
  • Monte San Giorgio with fossil museum in Meride - UNESCO Wold Heritage and geological nature educational trail. Numerous fossils of considerable scientific interest have been found.
  • Monte Generoso - at 1601m the highest mountain south of Lago di Lugano. Offers a variety of leisure options, including two theme trails. Fantastic views of Lago di Lugano and Alps.
