Weissenstein b. Solothurn
The Weissenstein peak (1284m) in Canton Solothurn in the first and highest Jura mountain chain is one of the Jura’s most distinctive vantage points, awarding a fantastic view over the Swiss Mittelland and the Alps from the Säntis to Mont Blanc.
This unique sunny ledge in the Jura Mountains is accessible in summer via a narrow pass road or various attractive hiking trails.
Sports enthusiasts will be drawn especially to the «Nidlenloch» cave system and the «Oberdörfer Klus» and «Balmfluhchöpfli» rock climbing parks. Paragliders and delta flyers find launching spots to the south of the spa hotel. Experienced mountain bikers can enjoy the challenging and exclusive downhill course via Nesselboden to the lower terminus at Oberdorf. In winter, the prepared sledge runs to Oberdorf (southern side, 4.5km, fast) and Gänsbrunnen (northern side, 4.6km, leisurely-paced and family-friendly with railway connection back to Oberdorf) are very popular.
The Hotel Weissenstein on Solothurn's local mountain, a former spa hotel, with its panoramic view is still a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, day trippers, business and vacation guests. To the south of the hotel, children can let off steam on a playground and explore nature in a playful way with the help of exciting information.
There are many sign-posted walks and hiking trails starting at Weissenstein, such as the Planetenweg or Planet Trail that leads from Weissenstein via Hasenmatt to the Grenchenberg, along a model of the solar system on a scale of 1:1 billion. There are also many popular circuit trails at Weissenstein of between around 2.5 to 3 hours hiking duration. They lead past innumerable dolines or sinkholes; natural depressions caused by water in soluble bedrock, in this case limestone. Around 200 species of plant grow in the small Jura garden at the southern-facing side of the spa hotel. It is in full bloom from June to July.
