Rheintaler Höhenweg
Rorschach–Sargans
From Bodensee through orchards and vineyards through a varying cultural landscape with castles and alps. Views of the Rhine Valley and the mountain landscape are constant companions along the Rheintaler Höhenweg.
The Rheintaler Höhenweg leads between vineyards and high moorland, crosses numerous vegetation stages from the Bodensee up to the Sargans Alvier region. The route from the metropolitan Bodensee region to rural, idyllic Appenzell offers a rich variety of culture.
The trail runs mostly along scenic heights above the Rhine Valley and below the Alvier chain, with good views over the valley to the mountains in Austria and Liechtenstein. Then you find yourself between apple orchards again, cross through the main winegrowing region of Canton St. Gallen with its specialities, Riesling and Sylvaner. The hike through the protected high moorland of the Alvier region can be combined with a visit to an Alpine dairy along the way.
Those interested in history also have the chance to spend time in one of the many castles along the route, all well-worth exploring, or to visit the Roman path near Wildhaus. The Rheintaler Höhenweg is particularly popular in autumn when the Föhn wind ensures clear views.
