Gletscherweg Morteratsch
Pontresina (Morteratsch Bahnhof)–Pontresina (Morteratsch Bahnhof)
This trip offers exceptional views of the crevasseriven Morteratsch Glacier and of the ice-capped peaks of the Bernina massif. Along the way, 16 information panels illustrate the retreat of the glacier.
The Morteratsch glacier is the largest glacier of the Bernina group. The starting point of this hike is the Morteratsch station of the Rhaetian railway near Pontresina. Immediately after the railway crossing, you can take the turnoff towards the Boval hut. After a short ascent, you reach the Chünetta viewpoint next to the trail which offers close-up views of the mighty glacier streams and impressive peaks.
The focus of the tour is the vegetation found on the glacier forefield and the signposted glacier theme trail to the Morteratsch glacier which includes 16 stations. They provide comprehensive information on the causes and consequences of glacier melt in the alpine region. Timetables illustrate how the glacier has retreated since 1850. Further information can also be found in the book "Lebendiges Gletschervorfeld". You descend back to the Morteratsch station on the same way through the sparse forest.
On this easy hike, children are accompanied by the mountain spirit Sabi. They are given the booklet "Sabi's big dream" with a story and tasks (available in the letterbox at the start, in most hotels in Pontresina, at the tourism office, etc.). The tasks can be solved on the hike and stamps are also collected. Those who have collected all the stamps and solved the riddle will receive a small surprise gift at the tourism office in Pontresina
