Alter Zügenweg
Glaris (Station)–Wiesen (Station)
Stunning rocky landscapes, wonderful forests, a clear blue mountain stream and perfect photographic opportunities: the hike along the old Zügenweg offers a wealth of diversity - for families, nature lovers and hikers.
From Glaris the trail heads to the right climbing up a road that then turns into a forest track. It continues to climb gently, gradually becoming narrower. The middle section through the magnificent woodland above Höheggen as far as the Steigwald provides varied views over the surrounding mountains and down into the impressive Zügenschlucht Gorge. Although the Zügenweg points towards the opposite slope from time to time, no noise can be heard from the main road.
The high-altitude trail heads back down into the valley: after the fork the descent is only 400 metres into the Zügenschlucht Gorge. In the gorge itself the trail continues along the old Zügenweg, following the Landwasser stream as far as Wiesen station. At this point it is definitely worth making the five-minute detour to the Wiesen Viaduct, the second highest bridge on the Rhaetian Railway, which offers yet another stunning view of the Zügenschlucht Gorge. The Rhaetian Railway takes you quickly and comfortably back to Davos.
