Chemin de Montoz
Untergrenchenberg–Montoz–Tavannes
This hike starts at Untergrenchenberg and explores the Montoz ridge. The summit is a hilly plateau, surrounded by a broad forest belt. The views from the Montoz extend all the way to the Alps, if the weather is clear.
The Montoz range, the first chain of the Jura Mountains with its bumpy, irregular plateau, offers gorgeous views of the Alps and the Swiss Mittelland. The summit at 1300 m is ideal for anybody looking for panoramic views and pretty landscapes. As many other mountains of this region, the Montoz is fairly steep on both sides, but has a broader and flatter summit. This is a perfect place for leisurely walks and to enjoy the lovely surroundings. The views range across the Mittelland and as far as the Alps, if the weather is clear.
The path with start in Untergrenchenberg follows the Montoz ridge. It is pleasantly flat, except for the route to Tavannes, an elevation drop of almost 1000 m. The path leads across tree-covered meadows that are characteristic for the region. Along the way you will pass some of the typical country inns of the Bernese Jura, known as métairies, where regional specialties are served. In the village of La Cernière, the view opens up to reveal the Chasseral and its antenna which is visible from afar.
Shortly after passing the Métairie de Werdtberg the descent to Tavannes begins. It alternates between forests and tree-covered pastures. Make sure you stop in Tavannes for a visit. You will enjoy the rich architectural, industrial and urban heritage. The industrial upswing of the town was due to virtually one single business: the Tavannes Watch Co. It was the reason for a population growth and for significant developments in the construction industry.
