Höhenwanderung zum Augstmatthorn

Lengthy and demanding ridge hike into the conservation area of the ibex colony on the Augstmatthorn, one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Lake Brienz area. After a very steep descent to Lombachalp, the trail leads through magnificent Alpine meadows to Habkern.
From the top station of the Harder Railway you reach the Harder Kulm Restaurant and from there hike up steeply eastwards into magnificent mountain forest. The trail then alternates along the southern slope of the Harder and the ridge itself before it zigzags up to Wannichnubel, which is bypassed to the south. Far below lies the village of Ringgenberg with Lake Burgseeli, and the village of Bönigen at the end of Lake Brienz. You suddenly reach Roteflue. On Alp Horet you leave the forest behind. The narrow trail leads mostly along the top of the ridge to Horetegg and a magnificent panoramic view.

For the ascent to Tritt and via the Suggiture on to Augstmatthorn you take the easy to follow ridge path. Here, numerous ibex romp in the bands of rock, on the cliff faces and on the ridge slopes. The views are magnificent: deep below lies Lake Brienz, towering up behind it is the Schynige Platte-Faulhorn chain and beyond that the glistening summits of the Alps. To the north the views extend to Hohgant, while to the west the Güggisgrat borders the valley basin of Habkern.

Initially extremely steep, the trail winds in zigzags down the slope of the alp into the valley. At the car park on Lombachalp you reach a paved road, which you need to follow for a few minutes. The trail then swings off to Wiesenrain and leads down a moderate gradient via Schwendallmi to Bol-Brücke below Bolsiten and Habkern.
