Riederfurka-Knebelbrückenweg

Riederfurka-Knebelbrückenweg

A fantastic and enjoyable hike around the Riederhorn with spectacular views, in addition to a visit to the palatial and historic Victorian Villa Cassel at Riederfurka. Some parts of the trail are a bit exposed.
This hiking trail leads from Riederalp around the Riederhorn. Going downhill to Oberried, it enters the Teiff Forest above the Massa Gorge, before it returns to Riederfurka. Some parts of the trail are a bit exposed.

From mid-June to mid-October this hiking trail in the midst of the UNESCO World Heritage site offers plenty of variety. Passing some typical Valais barns, you hike over a total of three wooden bridges made of spars, hence the name "Knebelbrückenweg". In the past, the constructions were a little more rustic and dangerous. Today the bridges are passable without any problems, even if they are somewhat exposed. The view extends towards the valley communities and the Gibidum reservoir above the Massa gorge. Years ago, it was carved into the rocks through the ice of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The trail then gradually snakes its way back up into the Teiff Forest.

The destination of the hike is Riederfurka with the historic Villa Cassel, built in 1902. Surrounded by green meadows and snow-capped 4000 m peaks in the background, the untouched landscape does not seem to be an appropriate setting for the palatial building. It once was the private holiday residence of Sir Ernest Cassel, a super wealthy German-British banker. Refreshments in the tea salon of the Victorian villa are in order before walking down to Riederalp West. Illustrious guests, such as Winston Churchill, used to be frequent visitors to the villa. The historic building now houses the Pro Natura Centre Aletsch, both a nature conservation centre with guest accommodations and the gate to the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage site at the same time.
