Jura Crest Trail

A varied hike between the upper St.Imier Valley and the Val de Ruz Valley with the winter-sports resort, Le Pâquier (hometown of ski-ace Didier Cuche). The top of the Vue des Alpes pass is not far from watch metropolis La Chaux-de-Fonds.
This hike gets off to a spectacular start as the route crosses the Chasseral ridge: against the backdrop of the entire Alpine chain, Lakes Murten/Morat, Biel/Bienne and Neuchâtel vie for the eye of the beholder! After the descent past the St-Jean farmhouse, the scene changes: at first, the path continues across broad Jura meadows before it plunges into the forests of Combe Biosse.

Following Le Ruz Chasseran stream, your route traverses extensive fields of wild garlic and crosses a series of little bridges until it finally leads into a wild gorge: the Combe Biosse. Erosion has made a deep incision here, and limestone rocks tower above you on either side. The scenery soon becomes more tranquil again as the path continues through the forest to the farming village of Le Paquier. This is where Didier Cuche, the former ski racer, grew up.

The area around Les Vieux is renowned for its "bocage" landscapes – which are actually a more familiar feature of Normandy. The meadows are bordered by abundant hedges and rows of trees. Drystone walls and shrubbery line the paths, often indicating the boundaries of the land plots. As you tackle the final ascent to Mont d'Amin, another sweeping view opens up: all the way to the Mittelland and back to the Chasseral massif. The flower-lined path takes you down through meadows until you reach the Vue des Alpes pass. This popular destination for excursions not far from the watchmaking capital of La Chaux-de-Fonds fully lives up to its name: hikers enjoy yet another superb view of the Alps as they near the end of this stage.
