Jura Crest Trail
Stage 6, Weissenstein–Frinvillier
From the roof of Canton Solothurn, with views across the Jura arc to the Mittelland and snow-capped Alps and on through forests and typical Jura meadows. The first third is also a Planetenweg (planet path). Language border at Montagne de Romont.
The road passes through an avenue of trees to reach the Hinterer Weissenstein mountain. You can visit the nearby Nidlenloch, an extensive system of caves that plunge to depths of 407 meters. Tours of the caves can be booked. After the Schilizmätteli rest area, the path skirting the nature conservation zone becomes narrower. You will mop your brow as you gain altitude, but your reward awaits you at the summit of the Hasenmatt: a fantastic vista of the Alps, the Mittelland with the loops of the river Aare, and the next section of the Jura Crest Trail.
After a short uphill and downhill stretch, you reach the high plateau on the Stallflue mountain – and your recompense is another of the breathtaking views that make hiking such a pleasure. After crossing the Küferegg ridge, you can choose to stop for a break at the Obergrenchenberg Mountain Inn or, shortly afterwards, at the Untergrenchenberg Restaurant. The first section of this hike simultaneously follows the Path of the Planets: you pass one magnificent meadow after another where cows graze, some of them kept for breeding.
This stage follows a section of the tarred road between Untergrenchenberg and Stierenberg. The scenery changes at Wäsmeli: you hike through the forest, past an ocean of ferns and across a clearing until you reach Sur-le-Châble. As you might guess from the name: you have now crossed the linguistic border into French-speaking Switzerland. The path is all downhill until you reach Plagne. You cross magnificent fields with old trees standing alone or in small groups before the end of this stage at Frinvillier rail station.
