Alpine Passes Trail

A day in or above the Valle Santa Maria, stretching up from Olivone to the Passo del Lucomagno. Preserved marshland areas of national significance with rich flora at Capanna Dötra.
The hike starts at Olivone in the upper Valle di Blenio, also called “Valley of the Sun.” The village lies at the foot of the pyramid-shaped Sosto and on the road to Passo del Lucomagno (Lukmanier Pass). At first, the trail follows along the road to Sommascona. This section does not even provide a hint of the spectacular scenery that awaits hikers very soon. A forest trail leads to Ospizio and then across several glades to Piera.

From here, the trail leads into the forest and gets steeper. After walking across the lush meadows near Oncedo and through another wooded section, you reach Dötra. This neat little mountain village makes living close to nature easy. From here on, the rich flora of the Lukmanier’s southern side reveals itself. The route continues across enchanting wildflower meadows with moorland characteristics to Croce Portera. The area’s beauty is so captivating that the view back to the Rheinwaldhorn almost gets forgotten. From the summit, the view extends across the varied landscape around the Centro Pro Natura in Acquacalda and to Passo del Sole. The smell of the region’s typical mountain pines, larches, and stone pines fills the air as you hike through the forested sections.

For the last half hour, a scenic path leads downhill to Acquacalda. “Living close to nature in spectacular Alpine surroundings” is the guiding theme of the local Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno. It was named “Eco-Hotel of The Year” in 1995. Today’s spectacular hike ends five kilometres south of the Lukmanier summit.
