Seewis im Prättigau
Seewis in Prättigau is renowned for the splendour of its springtime narcissi and clear Alpine air. Both are found along the hiking and biking trails through the mountain pastures around Seewis. The two summits, Vilan and Schesaplana, offer fantastic views.
The south-facing, sheltered slopes of the Vilan have an exceptionally mild climate. This is particularly ideal for the wild poet's narcissi, which bloom in the Seewiser meadows in spring. The Narzissenweg (Narcissus Trail) leads to the most beautiful narcissus fields and is best hiked during the flowering period at the end of May-beginning of June.
The Seewis climate is not only good for narcissi but also for people with cardiovascular disorders. Today's rehabilitation clinic building dates back to the era of belle époque. At that time, patients of the «Luftklink» (air clinic) were meant to become acclimatized to the Seewis mountain air before being transferred to Davos for convalescence.
Today it is the numerous hiking and biking trails that attract visitors to Seewis. The panoramic views make Vilan and Seewiser's home mountain, Schesaplana, two popular excursion destinations. The poet, Johann Gaudenz Freiherr, from Salis-Seewis described the view from Schesaplana with the words: «No language, no picture can describe this wonderful, awe-inspiring, unbelievable view». The poet's life is recounted on information panels along the Salisweg Trail. The trail leads past important sites bearing witness to the rule of the Barons of Salis-Seewis: from Bothmar Castle in Malans, to the Fadära Guesthouse and Seewis Castle.
The castle of the von Salis-Seewis family dated from the 17th century, however, was destroyed by a major fire in 1863 together with most of the other buildings in the village. The village and the castle were subsequently rebuilt, at that time mostly with stone. The reconstruction explains the regular layout of the streets in Seewis, an unusual feature in a mountain village.
