Reigoldswil
Reigoldswil is in the Waldburg district of Canton Basel-Land and situated at the far end of the Frenke valley. A cableway climbs the Wasserfallen, one of the most popular hiking and excursion areas in rural Basel-Land.
There was a 19th century project to connect Reigoldswil to the direct main railway line from Basel to Bern, via an around 4-km-long tunnel from Reigoldswil to Mümliswil (SO). Although construction on the tunnel was half finished by 1873, the company behind the project became insolvent the following year and the project was abandoned in favour of today’s Hauenstein route. Remains of the tunnel’s northern portal are still visible.
Although the railway construction didn’t come to fruition, Reigoldswil owns the only cableway in north-western Switzerland: it climbs the Wasserfallen (928m). Several mountain inns, some offering overnight stays, and picnic sites can be found in this beautiful Jura mountain terrain. A highlight of the day is scootering down to the valley terminus in summer or sledging down in winter. Scooters and sledges are for hire at the mountain terminus.
One of the most imposing buildings in Reigoldswil is the Haus zum Feld, under protection as a historic monument. The ground floor and adjacent barn are home to the historical museum on Reigoldswil and its environs. Exhibits include a dress trimmer’s parlour, historical agricultural implements, a shoemaker’s and a wheel-maker’s workshop and collections on topics such as fire and light, hunting, fishing and forestry. The village church of St. Remigius, built in 1562, is also worth visiting.
To the east of Reigoldswil on the way to Titterten is the ruin Rifenstein on a rock ledge on the southern flank of the Rifenstein (723m). The castle was probably destroyed in the 13th century by the Basel earthquake. Remains of the wall can still be seen today.
