Riehen

The Beyeler Foundation housed in a building by Italian star-architect Renzo Piano has made the stylish Basel suburb of Riehen famous far and wide. The magnificent collection of classic modern works and outstanding exhibitions attract numerous visitors.
For fifty years, alongside being the owner of a successful art gallery, Ernst Beyeler has also collected exclusive classic modern works. In 1997 he opened his collection to the public on a permanent basis, in a museum in Riehen designed by Renzo Piano. The collection now contains around 230 pictures and sculptures. The Beyeler Foundation also stages regular special exhibitions with international works of art.

Almost rural in appearance, Riehen lies on the right bank of the Rhine at the north-eastern edge of Basel, bordering on Germany (including the towns of Weil and Lörrach). The attractive rural location persuaded leading Basel families to move to Riehen as early as the 16th century.

The Alten Wettsteinhaus from the 17th century houses the Village, Wine & Toy Museum. This includes a collection of European toys, mainly made of wood, doll’s houses and kitchens, metal toys, lead and tin figures, paper theatres and railways. Children also love the Basel Zoo Langen Erlen, on the edge of Riehen.

Highlights

  • Beyeler Foundation - an art collection dedicated to classic modern, in an outstanding museum building by architect Renzo Piano.
  • St. Chrischona television tower in Bettingen/BS - visible from afar, at 250m the highest freestanding building in Switzerland and the second-highest structure after the Grande Dixence dam. Not open to visitors.
