Selden

Selden in the wild and romantic Gasteretal above Kandersteg is the starting point of the popular and challenging mountain hike over the Lötschen Pass. Selden has several mountain inns offering food and lodging.
The upper section of the Kandertal between Kandersteg and Kanderfirn, the source of the river, is known as the Gasteretal. The beauty of this narrow, east to west orientated valley enclosed by towering mountain chains derives from its remote situation and flower-carpeted spring meadows, with many rare species. The small village of Selden lies at the upper end of the Gasteretal, around 10km from Kandersteg. There are mountain inns offering food and lodging, and Selden is the starting point of various hiking and climbing tours, the best known being the hike over the Lötschen Pass into the Lötschental in Canton Valais.

The Lötschen Pass is the oldest Alpine traversal between the cantons of Valais and Bern and attracts many hikers. The wonderful view of 4000 metre high peaks is ample reward for the challenging ascent. The Lötschen Pass lost its historic significance as a pack mule route when the easier to navigate Gemmi route was opened.

The Swiss Alpine Club’s Mutthorn hut lies at the Kanderfirn, at the far end of the Gasteretal. It can be reached via the Gasteretal, Lötschental and Lauterbrunnental; all approaches cross the glacier.

Selden can be reached from Kandersteg on foot in around 2.5 hours or by mountain bike. The gravelled road has some extremely narrow sections and allows one-way traffic at alternating times only on the section above Kandersteg. Access to the Gasteretal by car is subject to a toll fee. There is a private bus service (reservation required) that is especially suitable for hikers with destination Lötschen Pass.
