Olivone

Olivone lies in the upper Valle di Blenio, at the foot of the pyramid-shaped Sosto. Olivone is the starting point for excursions and hikes in the Valle di Blenio and its branch valley, the Val di Campo. A rich cultural heritage bears witness to early trading routes through the sunny valley.
Olivone lies at an altitude of 900 metres on the road to the Passo del Lucomagno (1914m), which is open all year round and connects the Valle di Blenio with Disentis/Mustér in the Graubunden Hinterrheintal. Its geographic north/south situation between Biasca and Olivone means that the Valle di Blenio is a sun trap, often called «Sun Valley». The Val di Campo, a branch valley of the Valle di Blenio, forks off at Olivone.

The Valle di Blenio has several pass traversals; the Passo Sole, Passo del Greina and Pass Diesrut and is one of the earliest known trans-Alpine routes. Although situated in the austere and sparse Alpine landscape, the valley enjoys a mild, southern-alpine climate and has a tradition of viniculture. Mountain agriculture has made the valley into an agricultural treasure, producing many delicious local specialities that can be tasted at mountain farms.

The valley has an eclectic cultural-historical scene with several museums: Cà da Rivöi in Olivone (ethnology, religious art), the Blenio Museum in Lottigna and the Chocolate Museum in Dangio, the mineral and fossil collection in Semione and the Donetta Archive in Casserio/Corzoneso (photography) as well as masterpieces of the Lombardian Romanesque architectural style, such as the church at Negrentino.

SUMMER

Olivone is the starting point for excursions and hikes in the Valle di Blenio and the unspoilt Val di Campo, to the Luzzone dam and the impressive austere and sparse Greina Hochebene (high plateau).500 kilometres of hiking trails – often on old pack-animal routes – criss-cross the Valle di Blenio. Along the valley trail from Biasca via Acquarossa to Olivone are well preserved villages and historic and art treasures. The valley can be explored in depth on a three-day hike along the «Sentiero alto» from Loderio to Olivone. Further along the route on the way to the Lucomagno Pass is Acquacalda with the «UomoNatura» ecology centre and hotel.

WINTER

The nearly Campo Blenio is an especially family-friendly ski region with pistes and three lift installations. The slopes are ideal for skiing and snowboarding beginners. Winter-walkers can enjoy a footpath and snowshoe trails, cross-country skiers find prepared runs near Campra. The Nara 2000 ski region is above Leontica and has five lifts for skiers and snowboarders and a 5 km-long sledge run, the longest in Canton Ticino.
