Adliswil

Nestling between the Zimmerberg and Albis hill chains, where the vibrant metropolis of Zurich blends into the peaceful forests of the Lower Sihl Valley, the former village of Adliswil has now grown into a small town.
Adliswil is situated on the banks of the river Sihl, right on the boundary with Greater Zurich. Under the influence of Switzerland's commercial metropolis, Adliswil started developing into a town within the agglomeration back in the 1950s, and its population has now grown to almost 18,000. Adliswil is not only a preferred residential and working location, but also the perfect base for a variety of leisure activities: water sports on nearby Lake Zurich, hiking through the delightful hill country with its little ponds, cycle tours along the river Sihl and along the ridges of the Zimmerberg. Keen swimmers will find that the magnificent covered and open-air swimming pools meet their heart's desires - right here on the spot! Other attractions include an experience farm with a riding school and its own sheep farm. Culture enthusiasts can reach the heart of Zurich in just a quarter of an hour, but Adliswil itself offers a wide range of cultural activities centering on the «Kulturschachtle» venue which regularly hosts concerts, theatrical performances and other cultural events.

The aerial cableway (the only one in the Canton of Zurich which holds a concession) takes just five minutes to climb from Adliswil to the Felsenegg viewpoint atop the Albis mountain chain. From here, you can pick out a myriad of paths for strolling and hiking around the region as your gaze sweeps from the deep-blue lake on one side across to the Alps on the other. You can follow the Planet Path along the Albis ridge between the Felsenegg and Uetliberg peaks. Guided discovery tours of the solar system led by experts from the Urania Astronomical Society of Zurich start out from Uetliberg rail station and take about two hours.

The Sihltal-Zurich-Uetliberg railway (SZU) will take you to the Sihlwald Nature Centre and the nature forest of the same name, the largest continuous mixed deciduous forest in Central Switzerland. Well into the 19th century, the Sihlwald forest was crucially important as a source of timber for Zurich. It has been under protection since 1986 and is developing into a unique area of unspoiled forest in the heart of the densely populated Swiss Mittelland.
