Montbovon, a romantic village on the River Sarine in Canton Fribourg’s Gruyère district on the border of Pays-d'Enhaut, in Canton Vaud, surrounded by pre-Alpine natural beauty and idyllic countryside offering scores of outdoor options.
Montbovon is in the French-speaking part of Canton Fribourg, at the very back of the beautiful Vallée de L'Intyamon in the district of Gruyère. In 2002, The small village, population of about 265, joined with Albeuve, Neirivue and Lessoc to form one municipality, the Commune de Haut-Intyamon.
The quiet village nestles in steep, pre-Alpine surroundings on the River Sarine, or Saane as it is called in German-speaking Fribourg. It is an ideal area for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, canyoning or fishing at Lac de Lessoc lake or the rivers Sarine and L'Hongrin. In addition, it is situated on national cycle routes Nos 4 and 9.
The village has a grocery shop with cheese dairy, a hotel with restaurant for overnight stays and a country inn. The meringue factory is very tempting for those with a sweet tooth.
Among the many chalets, also found in the surrounding hamlets, one of the most beautiful examples is the former tavern «L’ Auberge de la Croix Blanche» in Pays-d'Enhaut. It was built by Antoine Jordan in 1723 and later became known under the name of «Le Vieux Chalet».
The new-Romanesque Saint Grat Church dates from 1897. Montbovon can be reached by public transport: from Montreux and Gstaad by the Montreux - Berner Oberland - Railway MOB and from Bulle with the Chemins de fer fribourgeois TPF.
