Schüpfheim
Schüpfheim in Entlebuch, Canton Lucerne is the main gateway to the Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve, Switzerland’s first UNESCO biosphere reserve. Above the village is the pilgrimage site of Heilgkreuz with an educational forest trail along the Seelensteg, a wooden catwalk.
The Biosphere Centre, the information and management centre of the Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve, stands at the edge of Schüpfheim village. The biosphere in the «Wild West of Lucerne» encompasses a variety of landscapes: the Napf, the Schrattenfluh, water meadowlands and – best known – moorland. No other region in Switzerland has so many and such large linked areas of preserved moorland as Entlebuch. In the international network of UNESCO biosphere reserves, the Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve represents pre-Alpine moorland and karst landscapes. In addition to the nature education experience provided by the biosphere, regional attractions include classic forms of leisure activities: mountain biking, hiking, golfing, and ski tours and cross-country skiing over the moorland in winter.
Almost all of Schüpfheim village was destroyed by fire on 27 May 1829. Of a total of 34 houses in the village, 22 were burned to the ground in a matter of a few hours. Only the church and a small number of surrounding houses escaped the flames
Heiligkreuz (1127 m), a traditional pilgrimage site is found above Schüpfheim. The Way of the Cross, which depicts the suffering of Jesus in 14 pictures, leads past the former Capuchin monastery and the Entlebuch Folk Museum. The «Seelensteg» lies in the forest landscape of Heiligkreuz: the 500m-long, slightly raised wooden catwalk made from pine trees blown down by the Lothar storm provides a circuit through a fairytale land of blueberry and fern forest.
A large inn built at Heiligkreuz as early as 1753 was later converted to a kurhaus offering Alpine and whey cures. Central Switzerland’s first skilift is close to Heiligkreuz: the toboggan-like facilities went into operation in 1938, long before those at today’s well-known winter-sports resorts.
