Meilen

Meilen on the sun-kissed «Gold Coast» is known for its low tax rate and high property prices. Major leisure attractions are excursions along the lake, the Pfannenstiel hiking region and of course water sports.
Meilen is located in the middle of the Zürichsee’s northern shore, about halfway between Zurich and Rapperswil-Jona, and includes the districts of Feldmeilen, Obermeilen and Dorfmeilen on the lakeside as well as Bergmeilen up on the slope. The lovely lakeside location and recreational area along the Pfannenstiel make it attractive to visitors. Meilen is reached by regional railway or boat from Zurich and Rapperswil, as well as by the convenient car ferry from Horgen on the opposite side of the lake.

Shops, restaurants and cafes are packed into the space between the railway line and the 500-year-old church on the lake. Well worth visiting are the impressive Protestant church in late-Gothic style, the «Löwen» as Meilen’s oldest tavern and the «zur Burg» Inn, one of the most representative wine-grower’s house on the Zürichsee lake.

Impressive villas and estates show that the northern shore of the Zürichsee - the «Gold Coast» - is not a recent premium residential area: the Mariafeld estate in Feldmeilen as the seat of the General Wille family, the baroque villa Seehof in Meilen, a wonderful three-storey gabled building with an outside staircase, an ornate balcony and lake garden frontage, and the Seehalde, created from a 16th century farmhouse.

A local museum tells of Meilen’s history. The lakeside location is perfect for water-oriented leisure attractions: cruises, lidos and an indoor swimming pool as well as cycling tours and walks along the lakeside etc.

Highlights

  • Pfannenstiel - popular nearby recreational and hiking area on the northern shore of the Zürichsee. A vantage tower is sited above the Hochwacht, the highest point on the Pfannenstiel.
  • Zurichsee cruises - the most convenient way to explore the Zürichsee region. The two historic paddle steamers are firm favourites with the public.
  • Horgen-Meilen car ferry - the 10-minute trip saves a long detour for motorists and cyclists as well as foot passengers.
