Avenches

The small town of Avenches lies in the wide Broye Plain between the Lakes of Neuchâtel and Murten in Canton Vaud near the border to Canton Fribourg. This former capital of Roman Helvetia has a rich and valuable heritage from Roman times.
In marked contrast to the old Bernese architectural style of neighbouring Murten, Avenches is unmistakably French-Swiss in character. The old town with its arcades and noteworthy façades in the Gothic and Renaissance styles has several restaurants, patisseries and outdoor cafés inviting passers-by to take a leisurely break.

Avenches’ location to the south of the Lakes of Neuchâtel and Murten (Neuenburgersee and Murtensee) was significant to both Helvetians and Romans. 2000 years ago, Aventicum was the capital of Roman Helvetia. The Emperor August founded Aventicum at the site of the former Helvetian capital. Aventicum’s zenith was reached in the 2nd century, when the town had a population of over 20,000.

A circuit path leads from the amphitheatre to the most important sights and excavation sites. The Roman Museum exhibits a valuable Gallo-Roman collection which includes a precious copy of the famous gold bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius as well as statuettes and mosaics that are remarkably well preserved.

An annual opera festival, an open-air rock festival and other cultural events are held at the amphitheatre in Avenches. Not far from Avenches is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Canton Vaud. Within is a museum devoted to Swiss aviation pioneers. There is another aviation museum at nearby Payerne.

At the Avenches beach on the Murtensee (Lac Morat) there is a camping site, a bathing beach with fine sand and a wide range of water sports facilities. Across the lake at Mont Vully there are paths through the terraced vineyards, which makes this an ideal area to combine a walk with a wine tasting session at a local wine grower. Mont Vully is known for its sparkling white wines.
