Château-d'Oex

Château-d'Oex is the main town of the rural Canton Vaud Pays d'Enhaut holiday region. The regional folklore museum in historic buildings in the village centre and the hot-air ballooning days in January are particularly popular.
The holiday town of Château-d'Oex nestles at about 1000 m altitude in the Pays d'Enhaut landscape, halfway between the chic Bernese Oberland holiday resort of Gstaad and the little town of Greyerz in Canton Fribourg. This holiday region is linked to the Lac Léman area by the Col de Mosses pass or the Montreux-Bernese Oberland Railway. Thanks to its favourable microclimate, Château-d'Oex has developed into a hot-air balloon metropolis: passenger flights are offered throughout the year and an international hot-air balloon competition is held each January – a spectacle with a cascade of colours and thousands of spectators.

But older traditions have also been preserved. Inspired by the folklore of mountain life, people in this remote mountain region have enjoyed practicing the art of silhouette cutting (scissor cutting) since the end of the 18th century. Examples can be admired in the old Pays d’Enhaut Museum or by watching actual artists. Several characteristic houses from the early 19th century in the village bear witness to the architecture and folk art of the region.

Having been awarded the «Families Welcome» label, Pays-d'Enhaut ensures that children are also well catered for. As one example, the entire family can search for treasure on the Mike Horn family trail. The theme trail on the life of ants is also very entertaining, as is a visit to the mineral and fossil collection in neighbouring Rougement.

SUMMER

A beautiful pre-Alpine hiking area lies in a small valley south of Château-d'Oex: La Pierreuse, the largest nature reserve in western Switzerland with rocky areas, forests, a wealth flora and fens. Pays-d'Enhaut offers bikers a large network of signposted tracks from the 1997 World Championships. You can enjoy white-water sports on the fast-flowing river Saane: canyoning, hydrospeed, canoeing/kayaking or river rafting. And one of Switzerland’s most beautiful river rafting routes lies between the wild Vanel and Gérignoz gorges.

WINTER

The La Braye ski region near Château d'Oex has seven ski lifts and 40 km of pistes. The ski areas of Gstaad are not far away or you can make your first attempts at Rougemont. The high plateau of Les Mosses – La Lécherette is very popular with cross-country skiers, snowshoe trekkers and winter walkers.

Highlights

  • Espace Ballon - balloon-museum in Château-d'Oex, charting the history of aviation and ballooning from Jules Vernes to the exploits of Piccard.
  • Musée du Vieux Pays-d'Enhaut – folklore museum in Château-d'Oex devoted amongst other things, to silhouette cutting, popular here since the 18th century.
  • Mike Horn Family Parcours – obstacle course by adventurer Mike Horn in the form of a family treasure hunt with interesting information on demands made on expeditions.
  • Le Grand Chalet in Rossinière – chalet dating from 1754 with 113 windows, home of well-known painter Henri Balthus, long been regarded as the largest chalet in Switzerland.
  • Etivaz cheese – made in cauldrons over open wood fires in the alp huts of the Pays-d'Enhaut, and also in the Le Chale» Fromagerie (show dairy) in Château-d'Oex.
  • Montreux – Bernese Oberland Railway (MOB) – Pays-d'Enhaut lies on this panoramic railway route which links Montreux on Lac Léman to Gstaad and Zweisimmen in the Bernese Oberland.
