Bülach

Bülach, the regional business centre in the Zurich Unterland is a surprise, with a vibrant old town and top shopping. Sightseeing attractions in the vicinity: the Petersboden vantage tower, Zurich airport and the Neeracher Ried (reed beds
Bülach is regarded as the business centre of the Zurich Unterland, located just over 15 km from Zurich as the crow flies. Bülach is one of six country towns in Canton Zurich with attractive historic town centres. The town hall is an impressive gabled building with a lovely timber-framed façade, dating from 1672. With its countless shops, Bülach is popular for «retail therapy» trips. Several markets with up to 140 stands add to the range of offers.

Initial traces of Bülach date back to the 6th century. In the 13th century, medieval Bülach was fortified by walls, with well preserved remains still visible today. In 1384 Bülach was awarded the Town Charter, securing privileges and liberties such as its own court of law and market rights. Bülach has belonged to Zurich since the early 15th century. Tiny Bulach Museum has information on town history.

Two kilometres north of the city is the Petersboden vantage tower, with lovely views of Bülach and its surroundings. A 40-minute hike from here takes you to Tössegg, confluence of the the Töss and Rhine, with barbecue and bathing spots and a WWF beaver trail.

The banks of the Glatt are popular for short bike tours while inline skaters favour the area around Zurich airport (car park at the end of the piste at Oberglatt makes an ideal starting point). Sports fans have a wide range of activities with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sport complex, climbing hall, Vita-Parcours (exercise trail), Finnish track, artificial ice rink and minigolf etc. On Thursday evenings, the Bülach Observatory (Sternwarte) offers the chance to view the heavens. To the west of Bülach is the Neeracherried, one of Switzerland’s last remaining fens. The fen’s flora and fauna world is on show at the SVS Nature Conservation Centre on the road between Bülach and Dielsdorf.

Zurich airport is another fascinating nearby excursion destination. Visitors have a choice of various viewing terraces and round tours. The excavation site of a Roman estate is open to the public at Seeb-Winkel between Bülach and the airport.
