Maienfeld

Maienfeld has two major jewels in the crown: firstly its internationally acclaimed Blauburgunder wine, rooted in a long wine-growing tradition. Secondly Johanna Spyri’s world-famous children’s book «Heidi», set above Maienfeld.
Maienfeld, 502m, the «third city on the Rhine», lies at the foot of the striking Falknis, on the east side of the Rhine valley. The fact that Maienfeld, with 2500 inhabitants, can call itself a city dates back to city rights granted in the 15th century. At that time, Maienfeld stood at the intersection of historic military and transit roads on the Rhine valley and Walensee route. The old town with its impressive mansions and Salenegg and Brandis Castles today rates as a cultural asset of national importance.

Maienfeld is the main city in the Bündner Herrschaft, the largest and best-known wine-growing region in Canton Graubunden. The permeable soil, sunny location above the Rhine plains and frequent warm föhn winds provide excellent conditions for grapes to thrive and ripen. First-class wines have been made here for centuries. Blauburgunder is the best known internationally. The total of 450 vineyard parcels are divided among around 130 cultivators, of whom 24 are winemakers who bottle their wine on their own property. Between April and November, the Maienfelder vintners take it in turns to offer invitations to weekend wine-tastings in their cellars or «Torkels». Light local specialities are served with the wine.

In addition to wine and the international horse races in, October, Maienfeld owes its high degree of recognition to Heidi, the figure from the world-famous children’s story by Johanna Spyri, published in 1880/1881 and translated into over 50 languages. Most of the story is set in the hamlet of Oberrofels, directly above Maienfeld. Today a Heidi Path leads from Maienfeld into a reproduced Heidi village, where a small living museum has been opened in the original Heidi house. Postcards with a special Heidi postmark can be sent from the post office and anyone who feels energetic can take the wide Heidi Trail up to Heidi Alp, 1111m, and back to Maienfeld via Vadella - Jenins.

Highlights

  • The Heidi Village in Oberrofels for kids of all ages: visit the original Heidi House with museum, the post office with a special Heidi postmark, animals, souvenir shop etc.
  • Heidi Adventure Trail from the village up to the Heidi Alp (approx. 90 min.).
  • The open Torkels (wine cellars) offer the chance to taste the famous Blauburgunder and get an insight into the diverse aspects of wine-making.
