Acquacalda
On the southern side of the Passo del Lucomagno – 5 km below the summit – is the small village of Acquacalda in the Valle di Blenio with the Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno which offers excursions into this nature conservation area of national significance.
The Lucomagno pass road runs from the Valle di Blenio to Disentis/Sedrun in the Graubunden Vorderrheintal and is open year-round. The Valle di Blenio has several pass traversals; the Passo Sole, Passo del Greina and Pass Diesrut and is one of the earliest known trans-Alpine routes. The Lucomagno (in German: Lukmanier) is a nature conservation area on account of its diverse and rich geological and botanical features. Acquacalda is the central starting point of many hiking trails to various bio topical landscapes with idyllic mountain lakes and ponds, soft marshland, mountain streams, impressive karst formations (dolomite rock and dolines or sinkholes) and a wealth of Alpine flora and fauna.
Living in accord with nature in majestic Alpine surroundings is the main theme of the Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno Acquacalda holiday centre, which was awarded the Swiss Solar Prize in 1994 and the accolade of «Ecological Hotel of the Year» in 1995. The Centro Ecologico at 1750 metres altitude is the ideal place to take courses on the relationship between man and nature or discover the many trails in this expansive hiking area. The small mountain hotel and restaurant beneath the pass summit has 40 beds, a state-of-the-art renewable energy system, an Alpine garden with almost 200 different plant species including 16 Alpine orchid species and a small camping site on the banks of a stream. The centre's aim is to promote a harmonious relationship between man and nature.
500 kilometres of hiking trails and several mountain biking trails criss-cross the Valle di Blenio. Several numbered and sign-posted theme paths offering a wealth of information on the Lucomagno area's biodiversity start at the ecological centre. In winter, the area is ideal for ski touring and snowshoe trekking.
