Spinas

Spinas consists of a railway station, an inn and a handful of alp huts. The hamlet at the east portal of the Albula railway tunnel is located in the seclusion of the Val Bever high valley, an area reserved for soft tourism.
The most impressive way to reach Spinas is by the world-famous Albula railway with its numerous viaducts and tunnels, a true masterpiece of engineering. After travelling through the Albula tunnel, you reach Spinas in Val Bever, the first railway station in the Engadin (1815 m). Passengers leaving the train here are met by the majestic tranquillity of an almost untouched high valley.

The babbling Beverin (river) seeks its path through airy larch woods and meanders along a narrow valley floor girded by steep slopes. In summer, this primeval landscape is an attractive place to explore on a hiking or biking tour. Demanding hikes are just as much on the programme as a family stroll along the Märchenweg (Fable Trail) down to Bever. In winter, visitors glide on cross-country skis or trek on snowshoes through the snow-covered serenity of the valley.

Spinas belongs to the Municipality of Bever and is linked to its mother village by an unsurfaced road. This is closed to motorized traffic and served by horse-drawn carriages.

Highlights

  • Albula railway line: the section between Thusis and Bever has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. With its helical and spiral tunnels as well as elegant stone viaducts, it makes a highlight for every railway fan.
  • Horse-drawn carriage rides through larch woods and along the course of the stream to Bever.
