Preda

With its location at the foot of the Albulapass and at the north portal of the Albula railway tunnel, Preda forms the gateway to the Engadin and has become famous for its sledge run on the pass road, which is closed to traffic in winter.
Preda is located at 1789 m at the upper end of the Albulatal valley. Politically it belongs to the Municipality of Bergün. The tiny hamlet has no more than 10 inhabitants yet has a lot to offer visitors. One hotel, a guest house, several holiday apartments and a railway station provide the basis for wonderful experiences in a primeval mountain world.

Arrival with the Rhätischen Bahn (Rhaetian Railway) via the winding Albula west ramp with its viaducts and helical tunnels is simply spectacular. The pass road, which is closed to heavy traffic, is extremely scenic and in summer attracts cyclists and motorists in equal measure. Preda is an ideal starting point for hikes in untouched nature - from short detours to the Palpuogna-See lake to Alpine tours (e.g. Ela tour).

Preda is particularly well known for first-class sledging in winter, alongside the 6-km-long section of railway to Bergün. Hourly train connections mean that the ski regions of the Engadin are only a stone’s throw away. Those who prefer the quieter side of winter can start ski tours and snowshoe treks directly from the village.

Highlights

  • Preda - Bergün railway section: the railway climbs 416 metres in height within a few kilometres thanks to numerous spectacular spiral and helical tunnels; a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 2008.
  • Historic railway trail: a theme trail leads from Preda alongside the railway line through the rugged Albulatal valley to Bergün and provides information on the special features of this globally unique section of railway.
  • Preda-Bergün sledge run: 6-km-long fun run in winter on the pass road, which is closed to traffic.
