Unterägeri lies at the western end of the Aegerisee (water level: 724m above sea level) along the Lorze River south-east of the town of Zug. The old village centre is situated a little way from the lake shore at the foot of the Wilerberg, on the old road from Zug to Schwyz.
Industrialisation came to Unterägeri in the 19th century with the harnessing of the hydropower of the River Lorze, for example for spinning mills. The emergence of industry attracted many workers to the area, and the population increased considerably within a short time. Towards the end of the 19th century, Unterägeri became a health resort. In recent decades, it has become a popular place to live for people who work in the surrounding urban agglomeration.
Much earlier, on 15 November 1315 precisely, the area around the Aegerisee was the site of a crucial historic event: Habsburg troops coming from Zug marched through the Aegerital (Aegeri Valley) to confront the Swiss Confederates. The ensuing battle at Morgarten by the Aegerisee ended in a crushing defeat for the Habsburgs.
The region’s main leisure attraction is the Aegerisee and surrounding area. Bedded in a hilly moraine landscape, a wide range of activities including hiking, mountain biking and water sports are available. Boats traverse the tranquil lake, restaurants serve the local fish, called Rötel and hikers and mountain bikers can explore the pre-Alpine terrain with Wildspitz and Zugerberg peaks. An expansive network of hiking trails through the Aegerital offers diversity and is suited to all levels of fitness. An easy path circuiting the lake is popular with walkers, Nordic walkers and cyclists.
The hiking or mountain biking tour to the Wildspitz (1580m) is challenging and compensates for the exertion with wonderful views. The Wildspitz is the Aegerital’s home mountain and the highest peak in Canton Zug. Another hiking and mountain biking trail leads from Unterägeri through the shaded Lorzentobel (Lorze Ravine) in the direction of Zug. This tour is suitable for hot summer days and also leads to the Höllgrotten caves, where a myriad of stalagmite and stalactite formations can be seen.
The Nollen ski lift is five minutes walk from the centre of Unterägeri and accesses a family-orientated ski region. The children’s lift is ideal for first attempts on skis or snowboard. Cross-country skiers can choose between three separate runs.
