Lungern

Lungern is part of the small resort of Lungern-Schönbüel. The emerald-hued waters of the Lungernsee and surrounding landscape in Canton Obwalden attract nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts alike. Winter-sports lovers enjoy the family-friendly ski region.
The resort of Lungern (750 metres altitude) lies on the Brünig Pass halfway between Lucerne and Interlaken. The idyllic rural landscape surrounding the village is an ideal place to relax.

Summer

The Lungernsee (Lake Lungern) has drinking water quality, up to 23 degrees water temperature and idyllic bathing spots, such as the small lido at Lungern with its fine sandy beach and long water slide. The dammed mountain lake is also popular for angling, yachting and windsurfing, and has a yachting school. One of the most beautiful walking and cycling trails is the path circuiting the lake. Nature-loving hikers will enjoy the Schmetterlingspfad, or butterfly trail – a 16 kilometre long network of paths with two main routes leading through flower-filled meadows. During the butterfly season (June to September) over 100 species can be observed in their natural habitat.

A nature theme path with over 100 information panels along a beautiful 2.5 kilometre long forestry path has interesting details about the interaction between flora and fauna and the Ice Ages. A popular excursion for families with children is the 30 minute walk from the village to the Chäppeli mountain inn with playground and children’s zoo. Other summer facilities include tennis, a climbing wall and crazy golf.

A cableway leads from Lungern up to Turren and the journey continues by chairlift to Schönbüel (2002 metres altitude). The «Lungern-Turren-Bahn» is the starting point of several hiking and mountain biking routes. The best known is the hiking trail to the Brienzer Rothorn peak.

Winter

There are prepared winter trails for hikers and snowshoe trekkers.

Highlights

  • Schönbüel – 2002 metres high with panoramic views to Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Starting point of the popular hike to the Brienzer Rothorn peak.
  • Indoor Schiess-Sport-Zentrum Brünig – underground shooting range covering an area of over 10,000 square metres hewn out of the rock face. Activities include classical sports shooting, archery, darts and blowpipe.
  • Brünigbahn – The narrow-gauge Brünig Railway runs from Interlaken via Brienz to the Brünig Pass, continuing to Lucerne and Engelberg. An interesting trip that doesn’t just appeal to railway enthusiasts.
  • ViaSbrinz Route – a long distance hiking trail named after the central Swiss cheese Sbrinz, following the old trade paths from Alpnachstad past Lungern, over the Brünig, Grimsel and Gries Passes to Val Formazza in Italy.
