Worb
As so many other municipalities on the edge of a city, in recent years Worb has increasingly become an agglomeration municipality: modern, of its time and functional - but losing some of its atmosphere in the process.
Worb’s real landmark is its castle, standing exposed above the village and catching the eye with its defiant keep. First mentioned in 1130, it was rebuilt in 1535 after a fire. It is privately owned and not open to visitors.
A great hit with younger bathing guests because of its long slide is the centrally-placed Worb Freibad (lido), also ideal to freshen up after a summer cycling tour.
The commuter stream into the capital has made the once unhurried, one-meter-gauge line via Gümligen and Bolligen-Worblaufen to Bern into an efficient tram and train service, to the benefit of all those wanting to take the train for a detour into the capital city.
The Stiftung Rüttihubelbad, four kilometres outside Worb in an extremely scenic setting, offers a hotel, restaurant and conference centre as well as the Sensorium, a permanent exhibition on sensory perception und laws of nature phenomena, with around 40 experience stations - stimulating experiences for all ages.
