Wetzikon

Wetzikon, the regional centre, and its surroundings offer attractive recreational opportunities with the Pfäffikersee lake and its protected reed beds, historic industrial culture, many museums, steam trains and hiking trails.
The small town of Wetzikon lies southeast of the Pfäffikersee lake. Long before our calendar began, fishermen and farmers settled in pile dwellings at the nearby lake. The Pfäffikersee and its reed belt is a nature reserve of national importance with typical upland and low-moor flora. The area can be explored on a round tour of the lake. The quiet, child-friendly lido and camping site at Auslikon lies at the lakeside in the middle of the nature reserve. If the Pfäffikersee freezes over, it’s very popular for ice skating or just strolling.

The local museum presents the history of Wetzikon with a collection of 20,000 objects. Another museum exhibits numerous lorries, buses and motors made by the tradition-rich manufacturers Franz Brozincevic & Cie Wetzikon (FBW). Professional equipment from the painting trade is on display in the Malermuseum (painter museum). The Kulturfabrik (culture factory), an autonomous cultural centre since the 1970s, is famous beyond municipal borders.

Particular regional attractions are the Bauma-Bäretswil-Hinwil steam locomotives of the Zurich Oberland Steam Train Society (DVZO). A 40minute trip with a steam train through a wonderful landscape is family fun at its best.

The «Industrielehrpfad (industry trail) Zürcher Oberland» from Uster via Wetzikon to Bauma (signposts) leads to selected industrial buildings. Information panels along the way tell of the industrialization era.

Adolf Guyer-Zeller (1839-1899) is famous as the builder of the Jungfraujoch railway. He often spent the summer months in the Zurich Oberland. Between 1890 and 1900, he had seven hiking trails built starting from Neuthal/Bauma, where he owned a spinning works (today a spinning museum). The Guyer-Zeller Trails can still be walked today.

Highlights

  • Trail around the Pfäffikersee lake – the ideal way to discover the lake’s protected reed beds and moorland.
  • Jucker Farmart – the fun farm in nearby Seegräben is particularly well-known for its pumpkins, with farm shop and restaurant.
  • Sauriermuseum Aathal – an unforgettable journey back to primitive times, the stars are the dinosaurs, or at least their skeletons.
  • Industriepfad (industry trail) Uster-Wetzikon-Bauma – on the history of industrialization in the Zurich Oberland, with 50 information panels.
  • Bauma-Bäretswil-Hinwil – the Zurich Oberland Steam Train Society (DVZO) arrange trips on selected days.
