La Tzoumaz
La Tzoumaz is part of the «4 Vallées» ski region. There are 150km of signposted summer hiking trails, some of which lead along the old irrigation channels. A downhill ride with a twist is a scooter descent from Savoleyres.
La Tzoumaz was originally called «Mayens-de-Riddes», which means mountain pasture belonging to Riddes. It was the first stage on the annual spring cattle migration to the high mountain pastures. Tourism is of greater importance than farming in today’s La Tzoumaz, which has 6000 beds for visitors and a population of 200.
La Tzoumaz is predominantly a winter-sports resort and part of the «4 Vallées» ski region. All kinds of winter sports are available here. Amongst numerous other facilities, there are three snowshoe trails.
La Tzoumaz is a popular hiking region in summer, with 150 kilometres of sign-posted trails. Hikes along the old irrigation channels, called Suonen, are an unusual and particularly tranquil experience The «Trail of the Senses» at an altitude of 1700 metres, is 2.7 kilometres long with 12 stops. It offers a close encounter with nature and appeals to all the senses. The path leads past the «Maison de la forêt», where the region’s animals and birdlife can be discovered and information is available on mountain farming. There is also an exhibition on the area’s newest inhabitant, the wolf.
The Rhône, Lac des Vaux and Fare are popular fishing grounds and there are mountain-biking routes in all degrees of difficulty. A downhill experience with a twist is a scooter ride from Savoleyres through field and forest down to the valley.
