La Punt

Divided into two parts by the River Inn, the tiny picturesque, Upper Engadine village of La Punt Chamues-ch sits at the foot of the Albulapass. It boasts beautiful Engadine farmhouses and patrician dwellings from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as attractive churches.
La Punt Chamues-ch lies about halfway between the classy, Upper Engadine resort of St. Moritz and the Swiss National Park. The beautiful 16th and 17th century houses at the entrance to La Punt reveal much of the long history of this village at the south foot of the Albulapass. The Albulapass (2312m) links the high Engadine valley to Bergün, Filisur, Tiefencastel and Chur in the north. The wonderful old Engadine houses, such as the 17th-century patrician villa of the Nereda-Albertini family (Chesa Merleda) and the Feldscher house from 1594 have been preserved despite all fires, natural disasters and modern building activity.

A bridge over the River Inn leads from the La Punt part of the village, to Chamues-ch. Worth visiting is the early Gothic church of San Andrea in Chamues-ch, a classic example of a Gothic mountain pilgrimage church with a slim, white tower, Romanesque door and Gothic vaulted ceiling. The nave and chancel are adorned with frescoes from 1505. Also worth seeing is the La Punt baroque church built in 1680. In the nearby village of Madulain, the ruins of Guardaval Fortress, a former look-out and customs post, stand guard over the villages.

The local inhabitants made an income as mercenaries as well as from trade and farming. Goods transport and travellers on the road built over the Albulapass in 1865 brought an economic boom – until fresh competition arrived with the opening of the railway in 1913.

Apart from the countless excursion destinations in the Engadine and nearby National Park, La Punt Chamues-ch offers a botanical educational trail, an inline skating stretch to S-chanf and guided hikes and wildlife-watching from July to October.
