Niederrickenbach

Niederrickenbach is regarded as «Switzerland's most natural centre of energy». And rightly so, for the traffic-free village not only exudes energy and tranquillity through its history as a place of pilgrimage but also through its location on a mountain slope above the Engelberergtal valley.
In «Maria-Rickenbach», as the place of pilgrimage is called, is the Chapel of the Holy Mary in the Maple, the goal of many pilgrims. In addition to antique votive tablets, the chapel also houses a legendary statue of the Virgin Mary. This is said to date from the time of the Reformation when images of Catholic saints were destroyed and was saved by a young shepherd. He hid the statue in a hollow maple tree on the alp and worshipped it through the summer. When he was about to leave the alp and wanted to take the statue with him, he was unable to free it from the tree. It was decided to build a chapel on the very spot in honour of the Virgin Mary. Not until this was completed, could the statue of the Virgin Mary be removed from the tree and placed in the chapel. The Chapel of the Holy Mary in the Maple became a famous place of pilgrimage. In the 19th century, some 15,000 people made pilgrimages to Niederrickenbach every year. During this time, a convent was also built around the chapel and nuns of the Benedictine order still live there today.

There are no longer as many pilgrims, however, visitors to Niederrickenbach still find contemplation, peace and energy. No cars are seen here as the 100-year-old aerial cableway provides the only access to the village. An extensive hiking and biking region crosses its unspoilt surroundings. Several tours can be shortened by taking the chairlift to Haldigrat. Paragliders and hanggliders can be watched from the Haldigrat panorama restaurant as they take off from the nearby summit station. It's also well worth paying a visit to the two Alpine dairies; Musenalp and Alp Bleiki. The many, well-kept barbecue spots along the trails are ideal for taking a break.
