Kerzers
Kerzers is located in the Fribourgese Seeland on the eastern fringe of the Grosse Moose, Switzerland’s particularly fertile «vegetable garden». Special family attractions; the Gemüsepfad (vegetable trail) and Papiliorama (tropical centre).
The Grosse Moos is a particularly fertile area with almost black soil in the Berner Seeland triangle of the Bielersee, Murtensee and Neuenburgersee lakes. Over 60 varieties of vegetables are grown and harvested here.
From May to October, the vegetable fields can be toured along various signposted paths between Kerzers and Ins railway stations, by bike, on skates, on foot or even on horseback. For the last few years, Kerzers has also had another attraction: the Papiliorama. This tropical centre is home to around 1000 butterflies from over 60 species. Another hall, the Nocturama has reversed day and night rhythms, offering the chance to watch countless nocturnal animals from the tropical forests of Central America. Papiliorama also has a spacious open area with a petting zoo and playground.
The Altus Farming Museum in the hamlet of Jerisberghof, near Gurbrü not far from Kerzers, presents farming culture and life between 1750 and 1900. In kitchens, parlours and chambers, utensils and furniture are laid out as if the farming family could return home from the fields at any moment.
This is also the starting point for a tradition-rich round-tour, either on foot or by bike, to typical buildings in the primal landscape on the edge of the Grosse Moos (about 2 hrs walk).
